29 Indian States and Capitals – 7 Union Territories & their Capitals

India is a Sovereign, Secular and Democratic Republic with a Parliamentary system of Government. The President is the constitutional head of Executive of the Union There are 29 states and 7 Union territories in the country. From the largest to the smallest, each State or UT of India has a unique demography, history and culture, dress, festivals, language etc.

 

All the states and two union territories, Pondicherry and the National Capital Territory of Delhi, have an elected form of government and legislatures. They are headed by a Chief Minister, who is elected for a term of five years. Other union territories are directly ruled by the Central government. Under the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, the states were reorganised on the basis of language. Let’s take a brief look at states and capitals of India including the list of union territories.

In the states, the Governor, as the representative of the President, is the head of Executive. The system of government in states closely resembles that of the Union.

From 2nd June, 2014, The State of Andhra Pradesh has been divided into Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Hyderabad will remain capital of both the resultant states for 10 years. The proposed capital for the state of Andhra Pradesh is Amaravati in Guntur district. With the inclusion of Telangana, here is the list of states of India with their capitals.

Union Territories and Capitals

 

Union Territories are those regions that fall directly under the control of the Union Government. Each UT has its own Lieutenant-Governor and Administrator. Only two UTs have Chief Ministers though as they have been granted partial statehood.

In 1991, the constitution vide the 69th amendment, made provisions to make Delhi a special Union Territory. It was declared that the former Union Territory of Delhi would be known as National Capital Territory. Check the following table to know the list of union territories in India and their capitals.
