SBI Clerk Preparation Tips 2018

English Section

In the English Section, you have got enough of the time to solve the questions efficiently, i.e., 20 minutes for 30 questions. Earlier, students used to have a mindset of doing with the English section within 10-15 minutes and thereby solving the questions of the Quantitative Aptitude or the Reasoning Ability Section that are comparatively complex and time-consuming. But, to their dismay, this strategy won't be working anymore as 20 minutes out of the total 60 minutes have to be given solely to English Section as per the SBI Notification.

  • You still have 2 months to grasp the maximum of the basics of this language so, make the best out of these 2 months so as you manage to attempt the maximum number of questions in this section in the examination.
  • Do keep in mind that accuracy should be the priority while attempting this particular section, as, many of you would try to attempt the maximum number of the questions in this section that kind of gives you the maximum average time for each question (20 minutes for 30 questions).
  • Those who think they are weak in English can choose to attempt Reading Comprehension as they will have enough of time to read and understand it thoroughly. The good thing about the RC is that it doesn't test English grammar, and one can do it easily by making use of their common sense.
  • The Reading comprehension too should be attempted in a way that you attempt questions based on vocab and phrases first and then the questions that need a deep penetration through the paragraphs.
  • The important topics for cloze test are subject-verb agreement, preposition, and verbs. These topics may help you some other questions too that will be based on grammar. So make sure that you have these topics at your fingertips when you are to attempt the examination.

Quantitative Aptitude Section

Earlier, students used to spend 25-27 minutes (on an average) on this section, but unfortunately, that is not going to be the case this time. As SBI has already restricted the time to do this particular section to just 20 minutes, you really need to break your back in order to attain good or satisfactory marks in Quantitative Aptitude Section.

  • This section needs the maximum of your hard work and travail as the questions asked in this section are calculative and very time-consuming and you will have only 20 minutes for a total of 35 questions.
  • In the examination, attempt the questions on Quadratic Equations, Simplification, and Approximation, and Number Series first as you would be able to solve the maximum number of questions within minimum time.
  • After having attempted all these questions efficiently, go for Data Interpretation. In every DI 3 questions are always doable and the rest two are a bit tricky and calculative. So, try to attempt at least those 3 questions with accuracy.
  • Rest of the questions will be based on arithmetic miscellaneous topics like CI & SI, Time and Work, Pipes, and Cisterns, Partnership, etc. Time will be running short and if you are left with some, then attempt these question too in the end.

Reasoning Section

This section is still a big sigh of relief to the students as, even before the introduction of sectional timing, students would give 20 minutes on an average to this particular section. Reasoning Ability is an onerous section, and with the increasing complexity of questions, it becomes hard for one to give it the cold shoulder. The only way to make the grade in this particular section in the forthcoming exam of SBI Clerk Prelims is to practice and only practice with all your heart and soul.

  • Attempt the maximum number of questions in Reasoning Section in minimum time by attempting the difficult puzzles in the end.
  • Start with the questions that are not in the form of puzzles, you can choose to start with questions based on inequalities, direction and distance, syllogism, coding-decoding, alphanumeric series, and other such random topics.
  • Then try to start with puzzles that appear easy to be solved and proceed with moderate and difficult puzzles in a similar way.

There was a time when each public sector bank in India had to take care of recruitment activities by conducting the selection process on their own. Today, things have changed drastically with the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) being nominated to complete the necessary procedure to fill vacancies.

At a time when the chips are down in the economy and the threat of downsizing looms in the private sector, candidates with professional qualifications are finding entry level jobs (Bank Clerk) in public sector banks attractive.

We will compare both these exams on the basis of following parameters:

SBI Clerk vs IBPS Clerk: Salary

Both SBI Clerk and IBPS Clerk will place the clerk on the following scale:

INR 11765 – (655×3) – 13730 – (815×3) – 16175 – (980×4) – 20095 – (1145×7) – 28110 – (2120×1) – 30230 – (1310×1) – 31540

Apart from Basic Pay, as a clerk in PSBs you will get the following allowances:

(a) Dearness Allowance (DA): DA is revised on quarterly basis (i.e. in the months of February, May, August and November) based on the CPI as declared by Government of India. The current DA has been fixed at 39.40% of the Basic Pay). When inflation is high, DA goes up and vice versa.

(b) Special Allowance: This has been added in 10th BPS (wef 01/11/2012) for clerks it 7.75% on which DA is also payable

(c) HRA: This depends on the place of posting and it can be either 10% or 9% or 7.5% depending on the place of posting.

Thus, the initial Basic Pay off a clerk will be INR 18,100 – 19,800 including allowances.

Bank clerk salary in SBI is 2000/- extra compare to other banks. Salary of SBI Clerk is more because of extra allowances SBI offers to their employees. So this round goes to SBI Clerk.

SBI Clerk vs IBPS Clerk: Educational Qualifications

The qualification for the Assistant’s position, the lowest rung in mainline banking operations, is a degree (graduation) from a recognized university. So, it does not matter if you apply for IBPS Clerk or SBI Clerk, minimum educational qualifications are same in both.

SBI Clerk vs IBPS Clerk: Roles and Responsibilities

Generally, roles and responsibilities of clerks are same across all the banks. This is the starting point for educated youth in the banks.  Usually, newly recruited bank clerk is given training for few weeks and then they are placed either in a branch or an administrative office. At the branch, clerical staff is supposed to work as Front Office person and has direct interaction with the public. However, with most of the banks being fully computerized, the job profile will be related to working on computers and entering the day to day transactions in the system.

Due to a big network SBI clerks gets more exposure as compared to their IBPS counterparts

SBI Clerk vs IBPS Clerk: Career growth Prospects

Those who have joined as a clerk can very quickly change their track of career.

In-cadre promotion of clerks

  • A person in clerical cadre who has completed ten years of service will be promoted to the post of Senior Assistant. This post shall carry a special allowance of INR 1800/-.
  • A person in clerical cadre who has completed twenty years of service will be promoted to the post of Special Assistant. This post shall carry a special allowance of INR 2500/- which will be ranked for DA & HRA
  • A person in clerical cadre who has completed thirty years of service will be promoted to the post of Senior Special Assistant. This post shall carry a special allowance of INR 3500/- which will be ranked for DA & HRA

Promotion of clerks to officer cadre

To Trainee officer

After three years of service, a clerk can become trainee officer after clearing written test and interview. Such clerks are put on probation for a period of two years. After successful completion of probation, the trainee officer based on performance will be either recruited into MMGS-II cadre or sent back to clerical cadre.

Directly to JMGS-I

After six years of service under fast track promotion channel or after twelve years of service under normal promotion channel, a clerk can become a JMGS-Scale1 officer, after clearing a written test and interview, subject to the upper age limit.

SBI Clerk vs IBPS Clerk: Final Verdict

SBI is one of the most preferred career options for candidates who are trying to get a government job. It is quite evident in the number of applicants for the post of Probationary Officers. Against 1500 vacancies for the post of Probationary Officer, SBI received approx. 17 Lac applications.

The same situation is for the recruitment of clerks. More than 30 lakh candidates appeared for the test for the clerk’s position.
